How a SoundCloud Misfit Redefined Modern Rap Through Emo and Unconventional Sonic Textures
In short: Jahseh Onfroy, known as XXXTentacion, rose from a Florida juvenile detention center to become a defining figure of the SoundCloud rap era. By blending lo-fi, trap, and heavy metal influences, he created a raw, genre-defying sound that resonated with millions, leaving a complex legacy of both artistic innovation and profound controversy.
Born in 1998, Onfroy’s early life was marked by instability and trauma, which he later channeled into his music. After his release from a juvenile detention center in 2013, he began uploading tracks to SoundCloud, adopting the moniker XXXTentacion—Spanish for temptation. His early work was notably unconventional, utilizing distortion and heavy guitar-backed instrumentals that drew inspiration from third-wave emo and grunge. This distinct aesthetic helped him emerge as a central figure in the SoundCloud rap scene, a movement characterized by harsh 808s and lo-fi production.
His mainstream breakthrough arrived with the 2016 single "Look at Me!," which gained traction alongside his signature half-colored hair, inspired by the fictional villain Cruella de Vil. His debut studio album, 17, released in 2017, showcased his musical versatility, exploring themes of depression and alienation. It peaked at number two on the Billboard 200. His follow-up, the 2018 album "?", debuted at number one. These projects earned him triple platinum certifications, cementing his influence on genres ranging from emo rap to the later development of rage music.
Onfroy’s career was frequently overshadowed by severe legal issues, including battery charges in 2016. While some critics argue these events define his legacy, others suggest his later attempts at personal growth represent a narrative of redemption. His life was cut short in June 2018 when he was murdered during a robbery in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Following his death, his estate released multiple posthumous projects, including the albums Skins and Bad Vibes Forever, and he became the first artist to release music as NFTs. By February 2024, his single "Sad!" had amassed over 2.1 billion streams on Spotify, underscoring his enduring, albeit polarizing, impact on the music industry.
