A season of turmoil and triumph: The 2021 Las Vegas Raiders' roller-coaster year
In short: The 2021 Las Vegas Raiders navigated a chaotic season defined by high-stakes drama and unexpected resilience. Despite losing their head coach to scandal and releasing two first-round draft picks due to severe off-field incidents, the team secured its first playoff berth since 2016, finishing with a 10–7 record.
The 2021 campaign was the franchise's 52nd in the NFL and its second in Las Vegas. It began under head coach Jon Gruden, but his tenure ended abruptly in October after the New York Times published leaked emails containing racist, misogynistic, and homophobic language. Gruden resigned, and special teams coach Rich Bisaccia took over as interim head coach. Bisaccia became the first interim coach to lead a team to the postseason since Bruce Arians in 2012.
Off-field controversies plagued the roster throughout the year. The team released 2020 first-round pick Henry Ruggs following a fatal drunk-driving crash in November, and 2021 first-round pick Damon Arnette was cut shortly after for brandishing firearms in a video. Additionally, fifth-round pick Nate Hobbs faced a DUI arrest in January 2022. Amidst this, the team saw a historic moment when defensive end Carl Nassib became the first active NFL player to publicly identify as gay, appearing in a regular-season game in Week 1.
On the field, the Raiders achieved a 10–7 record, clinching a playoff spot with a Week 18 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. The season was notable for the team's success in close games, as they won four overtime contests. Their playoff run ended in the wild-card round with a 26–19 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, extending the Raiders' postseason victory drought to 19 seasons. The year also saw significant executive turnover, with several top team officials, including president Marc Badain, resigning abruptly in August.
The season was the first in league history to feature a 17-game regular season schedule. While the team ultimately fell short in the playoffs, the resilience shown under Bisaccia allowed them to secure their first winning season since 2016. The organization's internal stability remained a subject of speculation, particularly regarding financial matters and the pressure from the NFL during the investigation into the Washington Football Team's workplace culture.
