A season of struggle and records for the Las Vegas Raiders
In short: The 2024 Las Vegas Raiders season was defined by coaching shifts and divisional frustration. While the team suffered its worst winning percentage since 2014, a standout rookie performance provided a rare bright spot amidst a difficult campaign that saw the franchise finish last in the AFC West.
The 2024 campaign proved difficult for the Raiders, marking their third consecutive losing season. After finishing 2023 with an 8–9 record, the team failed to improve, instead plummeting to a 4–13 finish. This resulted in a .235 winning percentage, their lowest mark since 2014. The season was also notable for a complete lack of success within the division; for the first time since 2006, when the franchise was based in Oakland, the Raiders failed to win a single game against AFC West opponents. This poor performance marked the third straight year the club failed to reach the playoffs. They also finished at the bottom of the AFC West for the 20th time in 22 seasons. This decline was exacerbated by a significant six-game winning streak by the Denver Broncos that was snapped during the season.
Leadership instability characterized much of the year. The team began the season under the head coach and general manager tandem of Antonio Pierce and Tom Telesco. However, following the season's conclusion, both men were dismissed, with Pierce being fired just two days after the final game. This followed a period of transition that began in late 2023 when Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler were replaced by interim leadership. The coaching changes followed a period of interim management during the previous year. This transition occurred after the team suffered a loss to the Detroit Lions in October 2023.
Amidst the team's struggles, rookie tight end Brock Bowers delivered a historic individual performance. Bowers recorded 112 receptions during the season, breaking the previous Raiders record of 107 receptions held by Darren Waller. While the team faced mathematical elimination from playoff contention due to losses in Week 6, Bowers' achievement stood as a significant milestone for the franchise's young talent. The team's season was further marred by an eight-game losing streak. This stretch of defeats was the longest the franchise had endured since 2014.
