The unexpected season finale that crowned the 2026 World Rally Champions
In short: When the 2026 Rally Italia Sardegna arrived in October, it was more than just a race through Sardinia. Following the removal of Rally Saudi Arabia, this event unexpectedly became the final showdown of the season, deciding the fate of the world's most elite rally drivers.
Held from 1 to 4 October 2026, the 23rd running of the Rally Italia Sardegna served as a high-stakes conclusion to the 2026 racing calendar. Based in Alghero within the province of Sassari, the event comprised seventeen special stages. These stages spanned a total competitive distance of 306.92 km, or approximately 190.71 miles.
The rally was a pivotal moment for the World Rally Championship, the WRC2, and the WRC3 championships. While the event entered the season as the thirteenth round, its status shifted to the season finale after the cancellation of the 2026 Rally Saudi Arabia. This change in the schedule placed immense pressure on the competitors to secure their titles in the Sardinian landscape.
The competition featured a diverse field, including eleven Rally1 crews, thirty-two Rally2 crews, and three Rally3 crews, alongside privateer entries. The stakes were realized when Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin officially secured their titles as the 2026 world champions. The event also saw success for Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, which successfully defended its manufacturer's title, and Oliver Solberg and Elliott Edmondson, who claimed their third rally victory of the season.
The podiums were equally competitive across the support categories. Roope Korhonen and Anssi Viinikka emerged as the winners in the WRC2 category, while Eric Royère and Maxime Andernack took the top honors in WRC3. The event's legacy was defined by this convergence of championship-deciding drama and technical precision across the seventeen stages.
