The 2025 conclave: a record-breaking election of Pope Leo XIV
In short: When Pope Francis died on 21 April 2025, the Vatican faced its largest election in history. With 133 electors from over 70 countries, the process broke long-standing limits and defied geopolitical speculation to elect a consensus candidate in just four ballots.
The 2025 conclave was a historic departure from tradition, marked by the sheer scale of its electorate. While the 1975 papal decree *Romano Pontifici eligendo* set a maximum of 120 cardinal electors, the 2025 election was the first to exceed this limit on the day the papacy became vacant. This was due to the significant expansion of the College of Cardinals under Pope Francis, which reached 252 members at the time of his death—including more than 140 non-European cardinals.
The election process was strictly regulated by canon law, requiring a two-thirds supermajority. With 133 eligible electors present—following the absence of cardinals Antonio Cañizares Lloverra and John Njue due to health issues—the threshold for victory was 89 votes. Despite intense speculation regarding the 'papabili' (the 'pope-able' candidates), the conclave moved with surprising speed. While some expected a long, complex process due to the diverse, global nature of the electorate, the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on 8 May 2025 was decided by the fourth ballot.
Prevost, who assumed the name Leo XIV, was a perceived 'dark horse' candidate. His election was seen by some as a 'dignified middle of the road' compromise. His victory was notable not just for his nationality, but for the speed of the consensus, which some observers suggested indicated a pre-negotiated outcome. The conclave was held under high security, with signal jammers used to isolate electors from mobile networks and Bluetooth, ensuring the integrity of the sacred proceedings within the Sistine Chapel.
