A New Schism: Why the Society of Saint Pius X Defied the Vatican Again
In short: On July 1, 2026, the Society of Saint Pius X consecrated four new bishops without papal approval, triggering an immediate declaration of schism from the Holy See. This act, echoing a similar crisis in 1988, has resulted in the excommunication of the bishops, priests, and lay followers who formally adhere to them.
The consecrations took place in Écône, Switzerland, on the same meadow used for the 1988 ceremony performed by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. The Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), founded in 1970, has long opposed the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, particularly the shift from the Latin Tridentine Mass to the Mass of Paul VI. The 2026 event was led by Bishops Alfonso de Galarreta and Bernard Fellay, the last two survivors of the original 1988 consecrations, who cited a state of necessity to justify their defiance of Pope Leo XIV.
The Vatican’s response was notably severe. While the excommunication of the bishops was expected under canon 1382, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith extended the penalty to all laity who formally adhere to the SSPX. Furthermore, the Church declared that sacraments administered by the Society are illicit, and that marriages and reconciliations performed by their ministers are invalid. This move surprised many observers, as previous attempts by Pope Francis had sought to integrate the group through limited permissions for confession and marriage.
The SSPX has rejected the Vatican’s decree as unjust and invalid, maintaining that they remain faithful to the Church while resisting what they term the modernist doctrines of the post-conciliar period. The schism is considered the largest for the Catholic Church since the Old Catholic movement of 1870. While the Vatican warns that the act severs the Society from the Church, the SSPX leadership argues that their actions are an extraordinary initiative necessary for the salvation of souls amidst perceived moral confusion.
The fallout remains uncertain. While some diocesan bishops have urged SSPX laity to return to communion, internal sentiment within the Society appears resilient. Members have largely dismissed the excommunications as a repeat of 1988, and the leadership has formally appealed the decree. As the Society continues to operate its global network of chapels and seminaries, the standoff represents a profound internal crisis for the papacy of Leo XIV.
