The climb toward Wembley in the 2026–27 FA Vase
In short: For clubs in the lower reaches of English football, the FA Vase represents a prestigious path to glory. This season's tournament features hundreds of teams from the ninth and tenth tiers, all competing for a chance to play on the hallowed turf of Wembley Stadium in May 2027.
Serving as a pillar of English football, the FA Vase is tailored for teams at Steps 5 and 6 within the National League System. This places the participating teams at the ninth and tenth levels of the overall English football league structure. The competition is a grueling test of endurance, scheduled to run from August 2026 through to May 2027.
The tournament's structure is complex, beginning with extensive qualifying rounds. Initially, 190 fixtures were planned for the first qualifying round involving 380 sides—185 from Level 10 and 195 from Level 9. However, due to Boro Rangers withdrawing from the Northern League in June 2026, the match between Squires Gate and Boro Rangers resulted in a walkover, meaning only 189 matches were actually played.
As the competition progresses, the field narrows significantly. Following the second qualifying round, which saw 360 clubs in contention, the tournament moves into the first round proper. This stage features 206 clubs, including 22 teams from Level 9 and four from Level 10 that joined the 180 winners from the previous round. The ultimate goal for these grassroots clubs is the final, which is slated for 16 May 2027 at Wembley Stadium.
The stakes are high, as success in the Vase can lead to promotion. For instance, the 2026 winners, AFC Stoneham, were unable to defend their title in the 2026–27 season because their promotion to Step 4 moved them into the FA Trophy competition instead.
