The road to China: how Asia's rising football stars secure their spot
In short: The 2026 AFC U-17 Women's Asian Cup is the 10th edition of Asia's premier under-17 championship. While the host, China, and the top three teams from the previous tournament have already secured their places, 27 other nations are battling through a rigorous qualification process to claim the remaining eight slots.
The qualification process is a high-stakes tournament organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). To ensure the competition focuses on the next generation of talent, players must have been born on or after 1 January 2009 to be eligible. This specific age restriction ensures the tournament remains a developmental platform for the continent's youngest elite athletes.
The structure of the competition is mathematically precise. The 27 participating teams are divided into eight groups: three groups containing four teams and five groups containing three teams. To maintain competitive balance, the AFC uses a seeding system based on points derived from the final rankings of the previous three editions of the tournament. Additionally, the eight teams designated as qualification group hosts are drawn into separate groups to manage logistics and competition flow.
The final tournament will be held in China and will feature 12 teams in total. While China, North Korea, Japan, and South Korea have already earned automatic qualification, the remaining eight spots will be decided during matches played between 13 and 17 October 2025. These matches will take place at centralised venues, with the qualification matches themselves held in Yangon, Myanmar. The entire journey began with a formal draw held on 7 August 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
This tournament serves as a critical stepping stone for young women in Asian football, providing a professionalized stage for players to showcase their skills before moving into senior international competitions.
