How Telangana's local elections shaped its urban landscape in 2026
In short: In February 2026, over five million voters in Telangana headed to the polls to decide the future of their local governance. From massive municipal corporations to smaller municipalities, this massive electoral exercise tested the democratic engagement of millions across thousands of wards.
On 11 February 2026, Telangana held its 2nd Ordinary elections for municipalities and municipal corporations. The Telangana State Election Commission, which had announced the schedule on 27 January 2026, oversaw the contest for 2,996 wards. The count comprised 414 wards within 7 municipal corporations and 2,582 wards throughout 116 municipalities. However, the scope was not universal; elections for three municipal corporations—Greater Hyderabad, Greater Warangal, and Khammam—as well as six specific municipalities like Siddipet and Manuguru, were not scheduled during this phase.
The scale of the operation was immense, involving 8,207 polling stations and 16,301 ballot boxes. Of the 52,17,413 registered voters, 26,67,025 were female, 25,49,750 were male, and 638 identified as transgender. Participation was significant, with a total turnout of 73.01%, representing 38,09,406 people. Interestingly, voter engagement varied by the type of local body: municipalities saw a 75.88% turnout, while municipal corporations saw a lower 66.05% turnout.
The election results were followed by an oath of office for elected ward members and corporators on 16 February 2026. This was followed by special meetings to elect leadership roles, such as chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, mayors, and deputy mayors. While most wards were contested, 14 wards across the state saw candidates elected without opposition. The process was complex, with 12,993 candidates remaining in the final list after 6,701 candidates withdrew prior to the vote.
