The logistical puzzle of expanding a global motorsport calendar
In short: Expanding a world championship isn't just about adding dates; it is a high-stakes balancing act between geography, logistics, and spectator interest. In 2019, the WRC faced a pivotal crossroads: how to grow the sport without alienating the core European markets that sustain it.
The FIA aimed to expand the World Rally Championship (WRC) from fourteen rounds to sixteen events in 2019. To achieve this, organizers evaluated twelve prospective bids across continents, including candidate events in New Zealand, Japan, and Chile. While some nations like Kenya, Croatia, Canada, and Estonia expressed interest in joining within five years, the immediate expansion faced a significant hurdle: team resistance. Many teams were unwilling to commit to sixteen events immediately due to the immense logistical pressures involved.
This pressure created a friction point between growth and tradition. The Tour de Corse and Rally Italia Sardegna were identified as 'unpopular' among teams because of the difficulties of traveling to Corsica and Sardinia, combined with low spectator attendance. A notable example of this tension occurred during negotiations for a rally in Japan. While an agreement was initially reached to host an event in Toyota City on Honshu (moving from its previous Sapporo location), the plans were ultimately abandoned when promoters faced pressure to retain the Tour de Corse instead.
Despite these logistical hurdles, the 2019 season saw successful expansion elsewhere. Rally Chile debuted in Concepción on gravel roads as part of the fourteen-round calendar. Additionally, candidate events in Japan and Kenya successfully secured places for the 2020 calendar. To manage the increased demands of a larger circuit, the FIA also implemented rule changes to limit maximum route distances to 350 km (217.5 mi) and reduced total annual test days from 55 to 42.
