In short: Based in Hawaii since its 1941 activation, the 25th Infantry Division is the only U.S. Army division never stationed in the continental United States. Known for its rapid movements and jungle expertise, this unit has served in conflicts from the Pacific War to the modern era of light infantry operations.

Activated on 1 October 1941 at Schofield Barracks, the 25th Infantry Division was formed from the former Hawaiian Division. Its nickname, Tropic Lightning, reflects the speed of its campaigns, which began in earnest during the Guadalcanal campaign in 1942. By February 1943, the division had helped end organized Japanese resistance on the island. Following service in New Georgia and the liberation of Luzon in 1945, the unit participated in the occupation of Japan.

The division's role in the Korean War was pivotal, beginning with its deployment in July 1950 to block the approaches to Pusan. Over the course of the conflict, the unit fought in major offensives, including the breakout from the Pusan Perimeter and the defense of Seoul. Its performance was highly decorated, with 14 soldiers receiving the Medal of Honor. Later, during the Vietnam War, the division maintained its headquarters at Củ Chi Base Camp from 1966 to 1970, engaging in intense operations such as the Tet Offensive and the Cambodian Incursion.

In 1985, the division underwent a significant transformation, reorganizing into a light infantry division to prioritize mission flexibility and rapid deployment. This shift involved shedding heavy equipment and expanding its aviation capabilities. Today, the division continues to conduct operations in the Asia-Pacific region, maintaining its readiness through joint training exercises. Its legacy is marked by a unique geographical history, having operated across the Pacific theater while remaining permanently based in Hawaii, a distinction that sets it apart from all other U.S. Army divisions.
