In short: The 2nd Infantry Division, known as the Indianhead, holds a unique place in American military history. From being the only U.S. Army unit ever led by Marine Corps generals to its modern role as a combined force in South Korea, this division has shaped global conflict for over one hundred years.

Constituted in September 1917, the 2nd Infantry Division was organized in France just weeks later. During World War I, it achieved the rare distinction of serving under Marine Corps commanders, including Major General John A. Lejeune. The division proved its mettle in pivotal battles like Belleau Wood and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, earning three French Croix de guerre awards for its gallantry. By the time the Armistice was declared in November 1918, the unit had suffered thousands of casualties, yet it remained a cornerstone of the American Expeditionary Forces.

Following the interwar years spent refining the triangular division structure at camps in Texas, the unit saw intense action in Europe during World War II. It landed on Omaha Beach in June 1944 and fought through the liberation of Trévières and the grueling Battle for Brest. The division’s campaign across Europe culminated in the capture of Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, on VE Day in 1945. Throughout these operations, the division demonstrated adaptability, utilizing everything from rolling artillery barrages to bunker-busting bombs to overcome entrenched German defenses.

Since the 1960s, the division has focused on the defense of South Korea, where it remains a vital component of U.S. forces. It is notably the only American division to integrate local soldiers directly into its ranks through a specialized augmentation program established in 1950. Today, the 2nd Infantry Division-ROK/U.S. Combined Division operates with approximately 17,000 personnel, including rotational teams, maintaining a constant state of readiness to deter potential aggression from the North. This enduring partnership reflects the division's evolution from a purely American formation into a sophisticated, multinational strategic asset.
