How a simple cold sore inspired a multi-platinum rock band's name
In short: Before they were headlining arenas and topping the Billboard 200, Godsmack was a local Boston band playing small bars. Their name didn't come from a song, but from a shared bout of illness between bandmates that turned into a joke that stuck.
Formed in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1995, the band began as a project called The Scam. Lead singer Sully Erna, who had played drums for over 23 years—including two years in the band Strip Mind—switched to vocals for this new venture. The name 'Godsmack' was born from a moment of levity: Erna noticed a former bandmate had a cold sore, and after developing one himself the next day, a bystander joked that it was a 'god smack.'
The band's rise was fueled by local radio, specifically WAAF (FM) in Boston, which put the track 'Keep Away' into heavy rotation. This transformed their sales from roughly 50 copies a month to over a thousand records a week. This momentum led to their self-titled debut album being released in August 1998 via Universal/Republic Records. The album was initially controversial due to its lyrical content, prompting the addition of a Parental Advisory sticker, though Erna noted the controversy actually helped drive sales.
Godsmack achieved significant commercial success, including three consecutive number-one albums on the Billboard 200: Faceless, IV, and The Oracle. Their discography includes nine studio albums and several other releases, such as the acoustic EP The Other Side. In honor of their success and the release of their sixth album, 1000hp, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh declared August 6 as 'Godsmack Day.'
The band's lineup has seen several shifts, including the addition of guitarist Tony Rombola in 1996 and drummer Shannon Larkin later in their career. Despite various lineup changes, they have maintained a presence in the rock scene, earning Grammy nominations and touring with major acts like Black Sabbath and Metallica.
