Why the 2014 Grammys moved their date to avoid a winter sports collision
In short: The 56th Annual Grammy Awards shifted to January 2014 to dodge a scheduling conflict with the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Hosted by LL Cool J, the ceremony became a landmark night for electronic music, featuring a historic mass wedding performance and a record-breaking win for a teenage songwriter.
Held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 26, 2014, the 56th Annual Grammy Awards were strategically rescheduled to avoid competing with the Winter Olympics. This was not the first time the Recording Academy adjusted its timeline for such reasons, having previously done so in 2010. The eligibility window for this cycle spanned from October 1, 2012, through September 30, 2013.
The night was dominated by the French electronic duo Daft Punk, who secured five trophies. Their project Random Access Memories earned the top honor for Album of the Year, while their collaboration with Pharrell Williams, Get Lucky, took home Record of the Year. The ceremony also highlighted a significant moment for social advocacy when Macklemore and Ryan Lewis performed their track Same Love during a mass wedding ceremony for gay and heterosexual couples, officiated by Queen Latifah.
The event also marked a milestone for youth in music. Lorde, at 17 years old, became the youngest artist to ever win Song of the Year for her hit Royals. Behind the scenes, the Recording Academy continued to refine its structure, expanding to 82 total categories—up from 81 the previous year—by introducing the Best American Roots Song award and renaming several categories, including shifting Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance to a dedicated Best Metal Performance category.
Competition was fierce throughout the nominations process, which was unveiled during a televised concert in December 2013. Jay-Z led the field with nine nominations, while artists like Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar, and Pharrell Williams each secured seven. Sound engineer Bob Ludwig stood out among non-performers, earning five nominations for his technical contributions to the industry.
