The 79th Tony Awards Marked a New Era for Broadway's Biggest Night
In short: On June 7, 2026, the 79th Tony Awards transformed Radio City Music Hall into a celebration of the 2025–26 Broadway season. With pop star Pink hosting and a fresh production team at the helm, the ceremony highlighted a mix of new adaptations and classic revivals that defined the year's theatrical landscape.
The 2026 ceremony represented a significant shift in leadership behind the scenes. After a two-decade run by Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss of White Cherry Entertainment, which lasted from 2004 through 2025, the production duties were handed over to Raj Kapoor, Sarah Levine Hall, and Jack Sussman. The event was broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount+, while the pre-ceremony show, The Tony Awards: Act One, was hosted by Laura Benanti and Tituss Burgess.
Eligibility for the awards was strictly defined by the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League. Productions had to be performed in one of the 41 designated Broadway-eligible theaters between April 28, 2025, and April 26, 2026. Following the announcement of nominations on May 5, 2026, the awards recognized excellence across a diverse field of productions. The musical adaptation of the television series Schmigadoon! secured the title of Best Musical, with co-creator Cinco Paul earning two individual honors among the show's four total wins.
While new works took center stage, classic storytelling remained a dominant force. The revival of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman emerged as the night's most decorated production, claiming six awards in total. In contrast, the play Liberation received a single award for Best Play. The ceremony also featured a poignant tribute, during which Leslie Odom Jr. performed the song Without You from the musical Rent, grounding the evening's festivities in the enduring legacy of Broadway history.
