How a college standout became the NFL's most prolific defensive rookie
In short: Shaquille Leonard entered the NFL with immense potential, but his 2018 rookie season defied expectations. Leading the league in tackles and earning Defensive Rookie of the Year, he became a rare force of nature, setting franchise records and proving that high-impact play can emerge from any background.
Drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the second round in 2018, Leonard arrived with high expectations but faced immediate physical hurdles. During the NFL Scouting Combine, a quadriceps injury while running the 40-yard dash prevented him from completing all drills, though he managed to finish the bench press and various sprints. Despite this, his performance at the Senior Bowl—where he recorded a game-high 14 combined tackles—bolstered his draft stock, leading to his selection as the 36th overall pick. His draft stock was further enhanced by his standout performance at South Carolina State's pro day. He was also highly regarded by analysts, with Mel Kiper Jr. ranking him as the sixth best inside linebacker prospect.
His rookie campaign was nothing short of historic. Leonard became the first player since 1982 to record at least 10 sacks and five interceptions within his first 25 games. He shattered Colts franchise records for rookie tackles, finishing the season with 163 combined stops. This productive stretch earned him AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors multiple times and a spot in the NFL Top 100, where he was ranked 26th by his peers. He also secured the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month award for September. Additionally, he earned the title of AFC Defensive Player of the Month for his play in December.
Known as "Maniac" for his aggressive style, Leonard reached unique statistical heights. He was the eighth individual in NFL history to post five sacks and five interceptions during one season, reaching this mark in under 15 games. While injuries eventually complicated his tenure in Indianapolis, including back surgery to correct impinged nerves, his impact remains etched in the record books, specifically as a four-time All-Pro selection. His career in Indianapolis concluded after he was waived in late 2023. He later signed with the Philadelphia Eagles to continue his professional journey.
