In short: Born to Kurdish parents in Germany, Agit Kabayel rose from humble beginnings to become the first German world heavyweight boxing champion since 1932. His journey from a railway track construction apprentice to a global titleholder is a story of relentless pressure, tactical precision, and a deep connection to his dual heritage.

Agit Kabayel, born in 1992 in Leverkusen, grew up in Bochum under modest financial conditions. Before finding his path in boxing, he pursued various interests, including football, kickboxing, and a stint as a bouncer, while initially training as a skilled worker in railway track construction. His professional boxing career began with a perfect 15–0 record, eventually leading to his first European heavyweight title in 2017. Over the following years, he navigated a challenging path, facing notable opponents like Derek Chisora and Zhilei Zhang, the latter of whom he became the first to stop in 2025.

Kabayel's rise to the pinnacle of the sport was marked by strategic upsets. In 2023, he defeated the undefeated Arslanbek Makhmudov in Riyadh, a victory that propelled him into the global spotlight. By February 2025, he secured the WBC interim heavyweight title by defeating Zhang. His trajectory shifted significantly in June 2026 when undisputed champion Oleksandr Usyk vacated his titles, resulting in the WBC elevating Kabayel to the full world heavyweight champion. This achievement made him the first German to hold the title since Max Schmeling in 1932 and the first champion of Kurdish descent in history.

Beyond the ring, Kabayel maintains a grounded life, residing in a multifamily home in Bochum with his wife, daughter, and extended family. He identifies as both Kurdish and German, actively promoting tourism in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq as a brand ambassador. His success has turned him into a significant cultural figure, celebrated as a national hero in Kurdish regions while remaining a dedicated supporter of his home country's national football team. His story reflects a unique blend of professional discipline and a steadfast commitment to his roots.
