How Three Brothers Transformed Tamil Cinema Through Production and Multiplex Expansion
In short: Established in 2006 by the Kalpathi brothers, AGS Entertainment has become a powerhouse in the Tamil film industry. By balancing high-profile film production with the strategic expansion of a multiplex chain across Chennai, the company has shaped the modern cinematic landscape in Tamil Nadu through both content creation and exhibition.
The journey of AGS Entertainment began in 2006, founded by the trio of S. Aghoram, S. Ganesh, and S. Suresh. Their entry into film production was marked by immediate commercial success with the release of Thiruttu Payale, directed by Susi Ganesan. This initial momentum continued with the 2008 release of Santosh Subramaniam, establishing the company as a significant player in the competitive Tamil film market.
Over the following decade, the production house demonstrated a diverse portfolio, exploring various genres. Their filmography includes the masala flick Maasilamani in 2009, the Western-inspired comedy Irumbukkottai Murattu Singam in 2010, and the period drama Madrasapattinam. The company also collaborated with notable directors, such as Myshkin for the 2011 crime thriller Yuddham Sei, Bala for the comedy Avan Ivan, and Prabhu Deva for the romance Engeyum Kadhal. Their production reach extended to major projects like the 2012 film Maattrraan and the 2019 sports action hit Bigil. Beyond production, the company has actively distributed films such as Kandhakottai, Inidhu Inidhu, Mynaa, and Payanam.
Parallel to their production efforts, AGS Entertainment expanded into the exhibition sector, establishing a multiplex chain in Chennai. Their first cinema opened in Villivakkam in 2013. This was followed by the launch of the AGS OMR theater in Navalur in 2014 and a T Nagar location in 2016. The company eventually added a fourth multiplex in Maduravoyal. Today, the organization operates four distinct cinema theaters across the city, cementing its dual role as both a creator and a primary venue for Tamil-language cinema experiences.
