The billion-euro battle for Spain's third-largest airline
In short: Once a charter specialist, Air Europa has become the center of a high-stakes corporate tug-of-war. From failed mergers with IAG to intense scrutiny from the European Commission, the airline's future remains a complex puzzle of antitrust warnings and shifting global alliances.
Founded in 1986 as Air España SA, Air Europa has evolved from a holiday charter operator into Spain's third-largest airline, trailing only Iberia and Vueling. Originally part of the British ILG-Air Europe Group, the carrier achieved a significant milestone as the first private Spanish company to operate national scheduled flights. While it has long served as a bridge between Europe and the Americas, its corporate structure has been defined by intense negotiations and shifting ownership.
The most dramatic chapter involves the pursuit of the airline by International Airlines Group (IAG). In November 201 honestly, 2019, IAG proposed a €1 billion acquisition, a figure that was slashed to €500 million by January 2021 due to the pandemic. Despite a subsequent agreement in February 2023 to purchase the airline for €400 million, the deal faced significant regulatory hurdles. The European Commission raised concerns in January 2024 that a merger could stifle competition on domestic Spanish routes and long-haul paths to the Americas.
By August 2024, IAG abandoned the acquisition, citing the heavy burden of meeting EU antitrust conditions. This left the airline's future in a state of flux, with various global giants like Air France–KLM and Lufthansa exploring stakes before withdrawing negotiations by August 2025. As of late 2025, Turkish Airlines emerged as a notable remaining bidder. Amidst these corporate shifts, Air Europa continues to expand its network, recently announcing a new direct route from Madrid to El Salvador scheduled for December 2026.
