How a 500,000-word fan fiction became a global cultural phenomenon
In short: It is the most viewed work on Archive of Our Own, boasting over 19 million hits. Beyond a mere digital story, this expansive reimagining of the Harry Potter universe has birthed a massive TikTok community, influential memes, and even a high-stakes publishing deal.
Written by the anonymous author MsKingBean89 between March 2017 and November 2018, "All the Young Dudes" is a massive 188-chapter epic. Set in the early 1970s, the narrative interweaves 1970s music—taking its title from the Mott the Hoople song—with a profound exploration of the relationship between Remus Lupin and Sirius Black, a pairing known in the fandom as "Wolfstar." The narrative spans from Lupin's childhood in a boys' home to the summer of 1995. It explores the heavy consequences of the First Wizarding War and the rise of Voldemort.
The story expands the established Wizarding World by focusing on the lives of the Marauders, including James Potter, Peter Pettiguew, and Lily Evans. It delves into Lupin's identity as a werewolf and his journey of self-discovery, including his realization of his sexuality in the summer of 1975. The work has been praised by critics for its historical depth and its ability to provide a vital, queer-inclusive space for readers. The plot follows Lupin's difficult life as the son of Lyall Lupin and Hope Jenkins. It details his later years as a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts.
The impact of the work extends far beyond the Archive of Our Own platform. On TikTok, the ATYD hashtag has amassed over 1.5 billion views, driven by character fancasts featuring actors like Ben Barnes and Andrew Garfield. The phenomenon has recently transitioned into traditional publishing; a novelized adaptation titled "Wolfboy" is slated for release in Autumn 2027 under the pseudonym BN King, marking a significant moment for fan-driven literature. The author's identity has even sparked internet rumors linking her to Taylor Swift. This massive popularity has led to a seven-figure auction at the London Book Fair.
