Aldon Smith: The meteoric rise and turbulent career of a record-breaking NFL pass rusher
In short: Aldon Smith arrived in the NFL with historic efficiency, shattering sack records and earning All-Pro honors in his second season. Yet, his professional trajectory was frequently interrupted by off-field legal issues and league-mandated suspensions, transforming one of football's most promising defensive talents into a cautionary tale of unrealized potential.
Selected seventh overall in the 2011 NFL draft, Aldon Smith immediately established himself as a dominant force for the San Francisco 49ers. Despite not starting a single game during his rookie season, he recorded 14 sacks, narrowly missing the all-time rookie record. His sophomore campaign was even more prolific; he tallied 19.5 sacks, surpassing the franchise record previously held by Cedrick Hardman. By the end of 2012, Smith had become the fastest player in league history to reach 30 career sacks, achieving the milestone in just 27 games.
However, Smith's career was marred by recurring personal conduct and substance-related issues. Following a 2013 arrest, he voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility, missing five games. His availability became increasingly sporadic due to multiple league-imposed suspensions, including a one-year ban issued in 2015 following a hit-and-run incident. These absences effectively stalled his momentum, and he sat out the entirety of the 2016 and 2017 seasons while awaiting reinstatement. His tenure with the 49ers ended in 2015, followed by stints with the Oakland Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, and Seattle Seahawks.
Smith attempted a professional resurgence with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, starting all 16 games and recording five sacks. He even returned a fumble 78 yards for his first career touchdown, marking the fifth-longest return in franchise history. Despite this late-career effort, his time in the league concluded shortly after a brief 2021 stint with the Seattle Seahawks. Following his release from jail in October 2023, Smith publicly declared that his football career had reached its end.
The contrast between Smith's on-field production and his off-field challenges remains a significant narrative in modern NFL history. While peers and analysts initially projected him as a generational talent—often comparing his impact to DeMarcus Ware—his legacy is defined by the tension between his immense physical gifts and the persistent personal hurdles that prevented him from sustaining his early, record-breaking pace.
