In short: Brothers Jatin and Lalit Pandit defined the sound of 1990s Hindi cinema, crafting iconic soundtracks for blockbusters like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Despite twelve nominations and record-breaking commercial success, they remain the most nominated artists in Filmfare history to never take home the trophy for Best Music Director.

Born into a musical family in Haryana, Jatin and Lalit Pandit were trained by their father, Pandit Pratap Narayan, and mentored in piano and guitar by Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma. Their partnership was born from necessity after Jatin’s earlier collaboration with his brother Mandheer failed to gain traction. The duo officially formed in the early 1990s, quickly establishing a signature style heavily influenced by the legendary R. D. Burman.

Their impact on Bollywood was profound. They were among the first to have lead actors perform their own songs, such as Aamir Khan in Ghulam, rather than relying exclusively on playback singers. Their work on films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Mohabbatein dominated the charts, with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge frequently cited as one of the greatest Bollywood soundtracks ever produced. Over their 16-year career, they composed 473 songs across 72 films, frequently collaborating with stars like Alka Yagnik, Kumar Sanu, and Udit Narayan.

Despite their massive popularity and critical acclaim—including topping BBC Asian Network polls—the duo faced controversy, including allegations of plagiarism from critics like Karthik Srinivasan. Their professional relationship ended abruptly in 2006 due to personal differences. While they reunited for a concert in 2020, they have largely pursued separate paths since the split. Lalit found success with the hit 'Munni Badnaam Hui' in 2010, eventually winning a Filmfare Award for that soundtrack, while Jatin has continued to compose for various film projects.
