A deadly curse haunts the students of Yomiyama North Middle School
In short: In the fictionalized Toyama Prefecture, a recurring calamity strikes Class 3-3. Since 1972, students and their relatives have fallen victim to gruesome, senseless deaths. When Kōichi Sakakibara transfers into the class in 1998, he must uncover the truth behind this pattern before the cycle claims him too.
The mystery centers on a phenomenon known as the 'Class 3-3 calamity.' This cycle of death began in 1972 when a popular student named Misaki died partway through the school year. The tragedy was so profound that students and teachers continued to act as if she were still alive, a presence that even appeared in graduation photos.
By 1998, the pattern had become a yearly occurrence for most Class 3-3 cohorts. Kōichi Sakakibara, a 15-year-old transfer student from Tokyo, finds himself entangled in the mystery alongside Mei Misaki. Mei is a quiet student who is largely ignored by her peers and possesses a unique ability: she can see the 'color of death,' allowing her to identify those close to dying.
The narrative explores how these deaths are linked to the deceased Misaki of 1972. As Kōichi and Mei attempt to stop the cycle, they navigate a web of connections involving family members and former classmates. The complexity of the curse is further heightened by the involvement of characters like Reiko, an assistant teacher who is revealed to be the 'Casualty'—the spirit triggering the deaths.
Originally published as a Japanese mystery horror novel by Yukito Ayatsuji on October 29, 2009, the story has expanded through various media. It includes a manga adaptation by Hiro Kiyohara, a 12-episode anime series produced by P.A. Works, and a live-action film released in August 2012.
