In short: Before the Garden of Eden, Gnostic texts describe a cosmic heist. According to the Apocryphon of John, humanity wasn't just born; we were engineered by a jealous deity who stole spiritual essence from a higher realm, trapping it inside our flesh as a form of divine imprisonment.

The Apocryphon of John, a 2nd-century Gnostic text attributed to the Apostle John, presents a radical dualistic cosmology. It begins with the Monad—a supreme, ineffable principle—producing Barbelo, a feminine entity who is simultaneously mother, father, and Holy Spirit. From this divine reflection, Light (Christ) and Mind were born. However, harmony was disrupted when an Aeon named Sophia engaged in creative activity without consent, producing Yaldabaoth: a grotesque, lion-headed serpent deity who became the first of the malevolent Archons.

Yaldabaoth created a 'dim' world fashioned from darkness but animated by stolen light. In his arrogance, he declared himself the sole God of this inferior realm. To populate it, the Spirit of the Monad’s voice left an image on the waters of this world's roof. The Archons attempted to copy this image, resulting in the creation of Adam. Seeking to reclaim the light trapped within him, Sophia and agents of the higher order (the Pleroma) devised a scheme: they tricked Yaldabaoth into blowing his own spiritual essence into Adam, animating man while simultaneously emptying the deity of his stolen power.

The narrative reframes familiar biblical stories as acts of liberation. Christ reveals to John that he was the one who caused Adam to eat from the Tree of Knowledge—not as a sin, but as a way to access the forces of the Pleroma hidden in Yaldabaoth's realm. Eve is described as a helper sent by these higher agents to liberate light from the physical body. The Archons, realizing they were losing control, initiated human reproduction to create new bodies inhabited by 'counterfeit spirits,' intending to keep humanity in perpetual ignorance of their true divine nature.

This text was so significant that four distinct versions survived into the 4th century, including those found in the 1945 Nag Hammadi discovery. While Irenaeus condemned it as a forgery intended to bewilder the 'foolish' in 185 AD, its influence persisted for centuries, even being used by the Audians of Mesopotamia in the 8th century.
