The first Dutch manager to conquer the Premier League
In short: Arne Slot's rise from a struggling midfielder with limited playing time to a Premier League champion is a masterclass in tactical evolution. By blending attacking aesthetics with clinical results, he became the first Dutch coach to reach the pinnacle of English football.
Slot’s journey began at FC Zwolle, where his early career was hampered by injuries and a lack of physicality. Despite these hurdles, teammates noted his superior passing and vision. He eventually transitioned into management, starting in youth coaching before becoming an assistant at Cambuur. His breakthrough as a head coach came in 2016 when he took over interim duties alongside Sipke Hulshoff, leading the club to its first-ever KNVB Cup semi-final.
His reputation for being 'studious' and 'innovative' preceded him to AZ Alkmaar. There, he set a club record by becoming the first coach to earn 19 points in his first eight Eredivisie games. After a brief stint at Feyenoord—where he won the Eredivisie and reached the Europa Conference League final—Slot moved to Liverpool in June 2024. His impact was immediate: he became the first Liverpool manager since 1998 to win his debut match, securing a victory over Manchester United on his first visit to Old Trafford.
The 2024–25 season served as Slot's historic peak. He led Liverpool to their first Premier League title since 2019–20, becoming the first Dutch manager to win the competition and the first to do so in a debut season since Antonio Conte in 2016–17. However, his tenure faced significant emotional and professional turbulence; following the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota in July 2025, Slot navigated a grieving squad before ultimately being dismissed at the end of the 2025–26 season.
