From Belgian youth academies to the World Cup stage: the career of Ilias Chair
In short: Born in Antwerp to Moroccan and Polish parents, Ilias Chair rose from the Belgian lower divisions to become a pivotal attacking midfielder for Queens Park Rangers. His journey includes a standout loan spell at Stevenage, international representation for Morocco, and a complex legal battle that recently concluded in Antwerp.
Ilias Emilian Chair began his professional development within the youth systems of Lierse, Club Brugge, and the JMG Academy Belgium. He made his senior debut for Lierse in the Belgian Second Division at age 17. By January 2017, he moved to England for a trial with Queens Park Rangers, eventually signing a permanent deal. His time at QPR saw him evolve from an Elite Development Squad member into a first-team regular under managers like Ian Holloway and Mark Warburton.
A significant turning point occurred during a 2019 loan spell at Stevenage. Chair made an immediate impact, scoring six goals and providing six assists in 16 appearances. His performance was so influential that manager Dino Maamria labeled him the finest player to ever represent the club and League Two. This form helped him secure a long-term future at QPR, where he continued to earn accolades, including the Championship Goal of the Month for October 2021.
Internationally, Chair chose to represent Morocco, the country of his father's heritage. After progressing through the U20 and U23 ranks, he earned his senior debut in June 2021. His international career culminated in his inclusion in the Moroccan squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he made his tournament debut against Croatia. Outside of football, Chair faced serious legal scrutiny in 2024 regarding an assault conviction in Antwerp. Following an appeal, his sentence was adjusted to community service and a financial penalty, allowing him to continue his professional career.
