In short: Founded in 1978 as the Trans America Athletic Conference, this collegiate league has navigated constant membership turnover, multiple rebrandings, and complex football alliances. Despite its instability, it remains a persistent fixture in NCAA Division I athletics, recently evolving into a specialized non-football conference under the new Unisun Sports administrative structure.

Established at the Dallas–Fort Worth Regional Airport Marina Hotel in 1978, the conference began with eight charter members, including Mercer and Samford. None of these original institutions remain in the league today. The conference faced immediate instability; by 1982, it had already lost charter members and struggled with NCAA compliance issues regarding new programs, forcing some to compete as provisional members. This pattern of rapid expansion and contraction defined the league's early decades, as it relentlessly pursued new members to offset frequent departures to other conferences.

The 2000s brought a name change to the Atlantic Sun Conference, though it briefly rebranded as the ASUN Conference between 2016 and 2023. The league's attempts to stabilize often involved creative, if temporary, solutions. In 2021, it partnered with the Western Athletic Conference to form the 'AQ7' to secure automatic qualification for FCS football playoffs. By 2023, this evolved into the United Athletic Conference, a football-only entity that eventually underwent further restructuring.

As of July 1, 2026, the conference operates under a new alliance called Unisun Sports. While the Western Athletic Conference has been rebranded as the United Athletic Conference to serve as an all-sports home for football-sponsoring institutions, the Atlantic Sun continues to function as a separate, non-football conference. This strategic alignment aims to provide administrative stability after years of shifting affiliations. Today, the league maintains its relevance by managing affiliate memberships in sports like swimming and diving, even welcoming back former members like Little Rock and Georgia Southern in specialized roles.
