The baseball team that moved the most—and kept a mascot out of spite
In short: Most sports franchises are defined by their roots, but the Athletics have spent over a century in constant motion. From Philadelphia to Kansas City and Oakland, they have become the ultimate nomads of Major League Baseball, carrying a history of rebranding, relocation, and a very specific brand of owner-driven drama.
Founded in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics, the franchise has moved four times: to Kansas City (1955), Oakland (1968), and most recently to West Sacramento (2025). This nomadic history makes them the only MLB team to have played in four different home cities. Their identity is a palimpsest of these moves; for instance, while they were officially known as 'Oakland A's' from 1972 to 1980, owner Charlie O. Finley attempted to scrub the word 'Athletics' from the name entirely to distance the team from his predecessor, Connie Mack.
The team’s visual identity has been equally fluid. Under Finley in Kansas City, the traditional red, white, and blue were swapped for kelly green and gold, leading to the 'Swingin' A's' era of flamboyant polyester uniforms. Even their mascot, an elephant, was a product of spite: it was adopted by Connie Mack in 1905 specifically to mock a rival owner who called the team a "white elephant." Later, Finley swapped the elephant for a mule in 1963—rumored to be a political move to appeal to Democratic voters in Missouri.
Today, the franchise is entering its most transient chapter yet. While playing in West Sacramento from 2025 to 2027 before moving to Las Vegas in 2028, their uniforms will feature unique dual-sleeve patches. One commemorates the temporary home with a Sacramento Tower Bridge logo, while the other serves as an advertisement for Las Vegas tourism. It is a masterclass in the mechanics of modern sports branding: maintaining historical prestige while navigating the logistical realities of a team on the move.
