A betrayed adventurer uses an unlimited gacha power to summon an army of legends
In short: Left for dead in the world's most dangerous dungeon, a human adventurer discovers his useless gift is actually a gateway to god-like allies. By tapping into the high magic density of the Abyss, he summons level 9999 warriors to dismantle the corrupt order that once tried to erase him.
In the light novel series Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon, written by Shisui Meikyō, the protagonist Light is a human adventurer in a world where humans are considered the weakest of nine tribes. Despite this, humans receive a special gift at age 10. Light's gift, 'unlimited gacha,' initially appeared useless, leading his former group, the Concord of the Tribes, to betray him. They abandoned him in the Abyss, a lethal dungeon, intending to disguise his death as a monster attack because they feared his potential as a 'master'—a being capable of overruling the world.
Light's survival changed when he discovered that the Abyss's high magic density allowed his gacha gift to function properly. He summoned Mei, a level 9999 Seeker Maid, who helped him train beyond the typical human level cap of about 100. Over three years, Light built an underground base and gathered a powerful retinue, including the level 9999 Forbidden Witch Ellie and the level 9999 True Vampire Knight Nazuna. These summons, categorized by rarity, form the core of his growing military strength.
The narrative expands from personal revenge to a broader crusade after Light finds his hometown massacred and humans enslaved by other races. He now seeks to liberate humanity and uncover the truth behind his attempted murder. The series, which began serialization in April 2020, has since been adapted into a manga by Takafumi Ōmae and an anime television series that aired from October to December 2025. Light's journey reflects a shift from a victim of systemic discrimination to a powerful leader challenging the world's established hierarchy.
The series explores themes of power dynamics and the consequences of prejudice. Light's summons, such as the level 7777 All-Rounded Gunner Suzu and the level 5000 Assassin Blade Nemumu, serve as both his protectors and his instruments of change. By navigating the complexities of his new kingdom and the 'Masked Clown' adventurer party, Light actively works to dismantle the systems that once sought to control or destroy him.
