A teenage boy finds his true potential in a world of magical artifacts
In short: Ginta Toramizu, a Tokyo student with poor eyesight and a love for fairy tales, is suddenly transported to MÄR-Heaven. In this fantasy realm, his physical limitations vanish, replaced by perfect vision and enhanced strength. He soon discovers a sentient artifact named Babbo and joins a battle against dark forces.
The story of MÄR-Heaven centers on Ginta Toramizu, who is summoned to a magical dimension by Alviss, a survivor of a previous conflict. Ginta quickly learns that the world is threatened by the Chess Pieces, an organization led by King Orb and Queen Diana that seeks to conquer the land. To defend MÄR-Heaven, Ginta forms a team of allies, including the witch Dorothy and a farmer named Jack, to participate in the high-stakes War Games.
Central to the narrative are ÄRMs, powerful magical objects that grant their users unique abilities. Ginta wields Babbo, a sentient, mustachioed ÄRM that can transform into various forms. The conflict is deeply personal, as the Chess Pieces utilize dark magic, such as the Zombie Tattoo, to resurrect fallen warriors and maintain control. The stakes are high, with Diana having previously betrayed the sorcerer kingdom of Caldia to steal hundreds of these artifacts for her own agenda.
The franchise expanded with a sequel, MÄR Omega, set six years after the original events. This story follows Kai, a young man who discovers he can activate Babbo despite lacking formal magical training. His journey reveals the existence of dangerous Fake ÄRMs, which drain the life energy of their users. These artifacts were originally created by a dark magician named Unwetter three centuries earlier, setting the stage for a new generation to confront the lingering threat to their world.
