How a strategic US reissue helped define the boy band era
In short: In 1997, the Backstreet Boys released a global phenomenon that arrived differently depending on where you lived. While much of the world received their second studio album, the United States received a unique hybrid reissue, a tactical move that helped cement the group's massive international success.
Released on August 11, 1997, Backstreet's Back marked a pivotal moment for the American boy band. While the album was distributed by Jive Records and Trans Continental Records to most countries, the United States saw a different product. Just one day after the global release, a US-exclusive version arrived, using the same title as the group's 1996 debut. This version was a hybrid reissue, blending a revised track list with extra songs from the new material.
The musicality of the album relied heavily on clever production techniques. By interpolating Gary Kemp's Spandau Ballet hit "True" and sampling Erick Sermon, Reggie Noble, and Clifford Smith's "How High" by Method Man & Redman, the lead song covers "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss". Although the group recorded "If You Stay" and "Who Do You Love" during these sessions, the latter was never released as a studio track, appearing only during live performances.
The album's commercial impact was significant, particularly in Canada, where it debuted at number one with 67,000 copies sold in its first week. By 2007, its Canadian sales had exceeded 1,048,000 copies. It also became the group's first of two albums to reach the top of the European Albums Chart, where it held the position for one week. Three significant hits emerged from the album: "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)", "All I Have to Give", and "As Long as You Love Me".
