How a $53 million expansion fee rewrote the rules of sports ownership
In short: When Bay FC joined the NWSL, it wasn't just a new team on the pitch. It was a financial landmark, featuring the league's largest expansion fee ever and a pioneering ownership structure that challenged long-standing American professional sports traditions.
The arrival of Bay FC in the 2024 NWSL season marked a significant shift in the league's economic landscape. The franchise was awarded on April 4, 2023, for a reported $53 million expansion fee—a figure ten times larger than the fee from the league's 2021 expansion round. Sixth Street Partners headed this huge capital injection, contributing another $72 million for the club's start-up, which raised the projected starting fund to nearly $125 million.
Beyond the sheer scale of the capital, the club's structure introduced a legal precedent for American professional leagues. No other American professional sports franchise had previously featured an institutional investor as its majority shareholder. Unlike various US leagues that previously banned or limited such stakes, the NWSL viewed the Sixth Street Tao Partners contribution—a balance sheet fund lacking liquidation mandates—as being akin to a wealthy individual owner. To lessen the danger of an early departure, the NWSL mandated that co-chair Alan Waxman offer financial guarantees and serve as the club's NWSL board of governors delegate.
A combination of sporting heritage and corporate planning formed the club's basis. The owners comprised four ex-USWNT stars—Aly Wagner, Danielle Slaton, Leslie Osborne, and Brandi Chastain—who had once campaigned for the franchise via 'NWSL to the Bay'. While the team currently plays at San Jose's PayPal Park, the club's identity is deeply rooted in the region, featuring a logo that integrates the Golden Gate Bridge and a color palette of 'Bay' blue and 'Poppy' red.
