From NYU economics student to professional wrestling journeyman, the evolution of William Morrissey
In short: William Morrissey has navigated a turbulent decade in professional wrestling, reinventing himself across major promotions from WWE to AEW. Once a promising collegiate basketball player, his career has been defined by high-profile tag team partnerships, public personal struggles, and a resilient return to the industry's biggest stage.
Born in Queens in 1986, William Morrissey initially pursued a path far removed from the ring. After attending Archbishop Molloy High School, he earned a scholarship to New York University, where he played center for the Violets and studied economics. His transition to professional wrestling began at Johnny Rodz's school in Brooklyn, leading to his 2011 signing with WWE's developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling. During this period, he roomed with Jonathan Good, later known as Jon Moxley, a time Morrissey has described as the best of his life.
Morrissey gained widespread recognition in WWE as Big Cass, particularly through his partnership with Enzo Amore. The duo, who first met as teenagers at Manhattan's West Fourth Street Courts, became a fixture of the NXT brand before reaching the main roster in 2016. However, Morrissey's initial WWE tenure ended abruptly in 2018 following behavioral issues linked to alcohol addiction and personal struggles. His departure marked a difficult period, highlighted by a public seizure at a 2018 House of Hardcore event, which served as a catalyst for his sobriety and treatment for depression with the support of Diamond Dallas Page.
Following his recovery, Morrissey rebuilt his career on the independent circuit and later in Impact Wrestling, where he competed as W. Morrissey. In 2022, he joined AEW as Big Bill, eventually securing his first major championship as an AEW World Tag Team Champion alongside Ricky Starks in 2023. After a four-year tenure with AEW, Morrissey departed the company in July 2026, immediately re-signing with WWE. He returned to the Raw brand in August 2026, reprising his Big Cass persona to re-establish his presence in the promotion that first brought him to prominence.
