Why Wall Street traders still rely on a specialized keyboard from the 1980s
In short: The Bloomberg Terminal is more than software; it is a financial institution. With its iconic black interface and custom hardware, it remains the primary tool for global market professionals. Despite the digital age, this proprietary system generates the vast majority of Bloomberg L.P.'s annual revenue through high-stakes subscriptions.
Launched in December 1982, the Bloomberg Terminal was the brainchild of Michael Bloomberg, who believed financial professionals would pay a premium for instant, high-quality data. After being fired from Salomon Brothers, he founded the company that would eventually dominate the market. By 2012, the terminal's annual revenue surpassed that of Thomson Reuters, the firm that originally pioneered the market data industry.
The system is defined by its unique user experience, specifically designed for traders without prior computer expertise. The hardware includes a custom keyboard featuring color-coded keys—such as the green 'GO' key, inspired by the Monopoly board game—and specialized hotkeys for navigating market sectors. While the terminal has transitioned from a self-contained 'Bloomberg Box' to a Windows-based application, it still relies on a proprietary client-server architecture to deliver real-time analytics, news, and messaging across a global network.
Beyond the core interface, the platform offers advanced tools like Launchpad for customizable data monitoring and the Bloomberg Open API, which allows users to integrate market data into third-party applications like Microsoft Excel. The company also manages the Financial Instrument Global Identifier (FIGI), an open standard for identifying financial instruments. With over 325,000 subscribers as of 2022, the terminal remains a critical, albeit expensive, utility for the financial sector, with annual fees typically starting at $30,000 per user.
The terminal's influence is immense, accounting for more than 85% of Bloomberg L.P.'s total annual revenue. While competitors like Refinitiv exist, Bloomberg has steadily increased its market share over the last two decades. The system's longevity is rooted in its ability to provide diverse, real-time information without lag, allowing traders to execute investments across global markets with precision.
