From a Georgia drag bar to Broadway: the rise of Bob the Drag Queen
In short: Before winning $100,000 on RuPaul's Drag Race, Christopher Delmar Caldwell was working in children's theater and performing in local competitions that cost more than they paid. Today, he is a bestselling author and a digital powerhouse with millions of followers.
Born in Columbus, Georgia, to Martha Caldwell, Christopher Delmar Caldwell's introduction to drag came via his mother's drag bar. Growing up in the "hood," as he describes Clayton County, he was encouraged by a supportive mother to pursue any path she envisioned. This early exposure set the stage for a career that transitioned from local performances to international stardom.
Caldwell's professional journey was marked by early financial struggle. In his early years, he participated in weekly competitions that resulted in losses rather than profits. His trajectory changed significantly in 2016 when he won season eight of RuPaul's Drag Race, earning a $100,000 prize. This victory launched a multifaceted career spanning acting, music, and podcasting.
His versatility is evident in his diverse portfolio. He has appeared in television series like High Maintenance and Tales of the City, and co-hosted the HBO series We're Here. In 2025, he achieved literary success with his debut novel, Harriet Tubman: Live in Concert, which reached The New York Times Best Seller list. By 2026, he became the first Black RuPaul's Drag Race competitor to surpass 2 million Instagram followers.
Beyond entertainment, Caldwell is an activist. He co-founded Black Queer Town Hall with Peppermint, an organization that raised over $150,000 during its inaugural event featuring figures like Angela Davis. His influence continues to expand through ventures like his production company, Purse First Studios, launched in June 2025.
