Three distinct heroes have carried the Blue Beetle mantle since its 1939 debut
In short: The Blue Beetle is not a single character, but a legacy spanning nearly a century of comic book history. From a vitamin-fueled police officer to a billionaire inventor and a teenager bonded to alien technology, the mantle has evolved through multiple publishers, reboots, and shifting origins across the DC universe.
The Blue Beetle legacy began in August 1939 with Dan Garret, a rookie police officer who gained super-energy from 'Vitamin 2X' to fight crime. By the 1960s, Charlton Comics reinvented the character as archaeologist Dan Garrett, who discovered a mystical Egyptian scarab that granted him powers upon saying the words 'Kaji Dha!'. This version was eventually succeeded by Ted Kord, a genius inventor who lacked superpowers but utilized advanced gadgets and his own research firm, Kord Industries, to combat threats.
Following the acquisition of Charlton Comics' characters in 1983, DC Comics integrated these heroes into their shared universe. Ted Kord became a prominent member of the Justice League, often paired with his friend Booster Gold, until his execution by Maxwell Lord in the 2005 story Countdown to Infinite Crisis. The mantle was later assumed by teenager Jaime Reyes, who discovered that the original scarab was actually a piece of advanced alien technology from a race known as the Reach.
The nature of the scarab has been subject to various retcons, shifting between magical origins and alien hive-mind technology designed to turn its host into a covert agent. Despite these changes, the character remains a staple of DC Comics, appearing in numerous iterations including the 2023 film Blue Beetle. The history of the character is a complex tapestry of publication anomalies, continuity reboots like 'The New 52' and 'DC Rebirth', and multiple creative interpretations that have kept the Blue Beetle relevant for over 80 years.
