In short: Founded in 1998 by three veterans from Sunrise, Bones began with a staff of only eight people. The name was chosen to reflect this skeletal beginning, representing a desire to work hard and eventually add flesh to the frame. Today, it stands as a powerhouse of modern Japanese animation.

The studio was established in October 1998 in Suginami, Tokyo, by Masahiko Minami, Hiroshi Ōsaka, and Toshihiro Kawamoto. Their early collaboration with Sunrise on the feature film Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door set the stage for a prolific output that includes acclaimed titles like Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, and My Hero Academia. The studio's growth has been marked by both creative success and significant loss; in 2007, co-founder Hiroshi Ōsaka passed away at age 44 after battling cancer.

Following Ōsaka's death, the studio's leadership evolved, with long-time animators and designers like Makoto Watanabe and Takahiro Komori joining the board of directors. Komori, who has been with the company since its inception, brought deep institutional knowledge to the team. This continuity helped the studio maintain its distinct identity while expanding its operational capacity through a decentralized structure.

In October 2024, the studio underwent a major structural shift by spinning off its production division into a wholly owned subsidiary called Bones Film. This new entity operates through six specialized studios, labeled A through F, each led by a dedicated producer. This modular approach, reminiscent of the studio's roots at Sunrise, allows each unit to focus on specific projects, ranging from long-running series like Bungo Stray Dogs to new ventures. As of 2025, all new productions are officially credited to Bones Film, marking a new chapter in the studio's history.
