How a coin toss secured the first pick for Breeze BC
In short: In the inaugural 2026 Unrivaled season, Breeze BC entered the league as an expansion team with high stakes. After winning a coin toss, they secured the first overall draft pick, leading to a roster that would dominate scoring records and redefine the league's early competitive landscape.
Breeze BC, based in Miami, Florida, joined the Unrivaled professional 3x3 basketball league for its 2026 season. Led by head coach Noelle Quinn, the team's entry was marked by a high-stakes expansion draft. Following the addition of Breeze and Hive BC to the league, a coin toss determined which expansion team would receive the first overall pick. Breeze won the toss, using the selection to draft Paige Bueckers, who was subsequently named team captain. The roster also featured Rickea Jackson, Aari McDonald, Kate Martin, and Cameron Brink. This expansion process was announced by the league in late 2025.
The team's debut on January 5, 2026, resulted in a 69–62 victory over Phantom, with Bueckers scoring the club's first basket. The season saw Bueckers set a single-game scoring record of 37 points on January 19, the same night she won the league's first Free Throw Challenge, earning a $50,000 prize for making 13-of-13 free throws in her first five games. Meanwhile, Dominique Malonga established herself as a dominant force, recording multiple dunks and high rebound totals. Malonga also recorded the second dunk in the league's history during a victory against Lunar Owls. On February 1, the squad achieved its largest win of the season.
Despite significant individual achievements, the team's season was marked by roster shifts and competitive volatility. Following an injury to Aari McDonald in February, Breeze acquired Courtney Williams from Vinyl BC. The team finished the regular season with a 6–8 record, securing a playoff spot. Their postseason journey ended in the semifinals on March 2, following a 73–69 defeat to Mist, despite a strong start in the opening quarter. The team also set a single-game record for blocks during a win against Vinyl. Paige Bueckers was eventually named to the All-Unrivaled First Team.
