In short: With the longest development cycle in franchise history, Black Ops 6 introduced a revolutionary omnidirectional movement system and a return to classic round-based Zombies. Yet, despite critical acclaim for its gameplay, the title became a flashpoint for debate after players discovered evidence of generative AI in its in-game assets.

Released on October 25, 2024, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 represents a significant pivot for the franchise. Developed over four years by Treyarch and Raven Software, the game was built on a shared engine to refine the core experience. Its standout technical addition is the omnidirectional movement system, which allows players to sprint, slide, and dive in any direction, or rotate 360 degrees while prone. This fluidity was widely praised by critics, who viewed the title as a return to form for the series.

The game features a complex single-player campaign set during Operation Desert Storm, following rogue CIA operatives hunting a paramilitary group called Pantheon. Alongside this, the return of round-based Zombies and a robust multiplayer suite helped the game achieve the largest launch weekend in franchise history. However, the post-launch period brought scrutiny when players identified irregularities in artwork—such as a zombified Santa Claus with six fingers—suggesting the use of generative artificial intelligence.

This discovery ignited a backlash, particularly following 2024 layoffs of 2D artists at Microsoft’s gaming divisions. In January 2025, following pressure from Valve, Activision officially disclosed that generative AI tools were used to assist in developing certain in-game assets. While the game received generally favorable reviews and was supported by six seasons of content, the controversy highlighted the growing tension between developers, publishers, and players regarding the role of automation in creative production.
