The perfectionist pursuit of a single saxophone note
In short: Before it became a global phenomenon, George Michael’s masterpiece was a sonic battlefield. From recording vocals with a broom handle to auditioning eleven musicians, the journey to create this iconic ballad was defined by a refusal to settle for anything less than a specific, elusive feeling.
The creation of 'Careseb Whisper' was a multi-year process of refinement. Written by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley when Michael was just 17, the song's origins trace back to a bus ride to a restaurant job in Hertfordshire. While the initial 1982 demo was recorded for just £20 using a broom handle as a microphone stand, the quest for the perfect studio version became a saga of musical perfectionism.
A significant hurdle was the song's signature saxophone part. In 1983, during sessions at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama, producer Jerry Wexler brought in virtuoso Tom Scott. However, Michael found the performance lacked the necessary character. The tension became so palpable that studio staff reportedly felt embarrassed as Michael repeatedly hummed adjustments to the player. Wexler even suggested the original demo's charm came from 'incorrect' fingering that a more skilled player simply couldn't replicate.
The breakthrough finally arrived at Sarm West Studio 2 in London. After auditioning numerous musicians, Steve Gregory was selected. To achieve the precise tone Michael envisioned, the team employed a technical trick: they slowed the tape by a semitone, allowing Gregory to play the part using proper fingering on a tenor saxophone, then returned the tape to its original speed. This technical nuance helped the song reach number one in 25 countries and sell over eleven million copies worldwide.
Despite its massive success, the song's release was delayed by internal industry maneuvers. Michael's publisher, Dick Leahy, intervened to stop a planned 1983 release to protect the song's potential. This delay allowed the track to serve as a pivotal vehicle for Michael's transition from the pop duo Wham! toward his legendary solo career.
