In short: Carice van Houten has achieved global stardom, yet she has no desire to live in Hollywood. From winning multiple Golden Calf awards to becoming a household name as Melisandre in Game of Thrones, her career is defined by a preference for nuanced, often non-verbal storytelling over the glitz of the American film industry.

Born in Leiderdorp in 1976, van Houten's career was shaped by an early affinity for silent films, a passion that evolved into a professional preference for performing scenes without dialogue. Her rise in the Dutch film industry was rapid; she secured her first leading role in the 1999 television film Suzy Q, which earned her a Golden Calf for Best Acting in a Television Drama. She followed this success with another Golden Calf for her role in Miss Minoes in 2001.

Her international breakthrough came via the 2006 film Black Book, the most commercially successful Dutch film to date. For her performance as Rachel Stein, she received a second Golden Calf and garnered nominations from the European Film Academy and the Chicago Film Critics Association. Director Paul Verhoeven famously praised her talent, comparing her to Sharon Stone. This momentum carried her into major English-language productions like Valkyrie, Repo Men, and the HBO fantasy epic Game of Thrones.

In Game of Thrones, van Houten portrayed the priestess Melisandre from 2012 to 2019, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for her final appearance in the episode "The Long Night." Interestingly, she was one of three actors from the series who had to self-submit and pay entry fees to be considered for the Emmy ballot after HBO declined to do so. Despite this global recognition, van Houten remains rooted in Europe, telling her agent that Hollywood is simply not her kind of life.

Beyond the screen, van Houten is an activist. In 2023, she was arrested during a climate protest on the A12 motorway in The Hague and has advocated for ecocide to be recognized as a crime at the International Criminal Court.
