In short: From busking on the London Underground to dominating global charts, George Michael’s ascent was fueled by a refusal to accept his father's disapproval. He transformed from a teen idol in Wham! into a solo powerhouse, redefining pop music through soulful vocals and boundary-pushing visual artistry.

Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in 1963, the singer’s path was shaped by a tension between his musical ambitions and his father’s wishes. His father, a Greek-Cypriot restaurateur who moved to England in the 1950s, strongly opposed a career in music. Undeterred, the young musician, often called 'Yog' during his school years in Radlett, began busking on the London Underground and performing as a DJ before forming the duo Wham! with Andrew Ridgeley in 1981.

His solo career reached unprecedented heights with the 1987 album 'Faith', which sold over 25 million copies worldwide and earned a Grammy for Album of the Year. While he achieved massive commercial success with hits like 'Careless Whisper' and 'Faith', Michael also used his platform to navigate complex social themes. He famously resisted the 'sex symbol' label, even recruiting a group of famous supermodels—including Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford—to appear in the 'Freedom! '90' music video in place of himself.

Beyond the charts, Michael was a significant cultural figure. He was a prominent LGBTQ+ rights campaigner and a fundraiser for HIV/AIDS charities. His career was marked by both immense triumph, such as being the most played artist on British radio from 1984 to 2004, and personal struggle, including legal issues and health battles. He passed away on Christmas Day in 2016, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential recording artists in history.
