How a former Laker Girl became the most untouchable force in WWE history
In short: Leah Van Dale, known to millions as Carmella, transitioned from professional dancing to the wrestling ring to become a decorated champion. Her career was defined by record-breaking persistence, a unique alliance with R-Truth, and a legacy as the first woman to successfully cash in the Money in the Bank contract.
Born in Spencer, Massachusetts, Leah Van Dale was a second-generation wrestler who initially pursued a career in dance. After cheering for the New England Patriots and performing as a Laker Girl during the 2010–2011 season, she signed with WWE in 2013. Her early tenure in the developmental brand NXT saw her managing Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady, but she soon carved out an independent identity that propelled her to the main roster by 2016.
Carmella’s most significant milestone arrived in 2017 when she won the inaugural women's Money in the Bank ladder match. She held the contract for 287 days—the longest duration in WWE history—before successfully cashing it in against Charlotte Flair in April 2018 to capture the SmackDown Women's Championship. This victory cemented her status as a formidable competitor, earning her the title of Most Improved Wrestler of the Year in 2018.
Beyond her individual accolades, Carmella was known for her versatile storytelling. Her partnership with R-Truth, dubbed The Fabulous Truth, became a fan favorite, leading them to win the Mixed Match Challenge in 2018. She also held the WWE 24/7 Championship and the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship alongside Queen Zelina. Her career was marked by resilience, including a return to the ring after a hiatus and navigating the challenges of motherhood.
After a near twelve-year tenure, Carmella’s contract expired in February 2025. In September 2026, she officially announced her retirement from professional wrestling. Her impact remains documented through her various championships, her entrepreneurial ventures like her wine label Capo Cagna, and her contributions to the WWE 2K video game series, leaving behind a legacy that blends athletic performance with high-profile entertainment.
