From a near-fatal plane crash to building professional football leagues
In short: In 2004, Charlie Ebersol survived a plane crash that claimed the lives of his brother and pilot. This brush with death later inspired his television work, leading him from documentary filmmaking to founding the Alliance of American Football and developing advanced sports data technologies.
Charlie Ebersol's career is defined by a profound transition from survivor to media entrepreneur. While he was a senior at the University of Notre Dame, a flight accident on November 28, 2004, claimed the life of his younger brother, Teddy, as well as the pilot and a flight attendant. While Ebersol and his father, television executive Dick Ebersol, survived with extensive injuries, the experience profoundly influenced his later creative pursuits, specifically the USA Network show The Moment, which focused on giving people second chances.
His media ventures have spanned diverse formats, from the documentary 'Ithuteng: Never Stop Learning'—which inspired a $1.14 million donation by Oprah Winfrey to the Ithuteng Trust School—to high-stakes reality television like NBC's 'The Wanted'. He has also worked on major productions such as 'Space Jam: A New Legacy' and the ESPN '30 for 30' documentary 'This Was the XFL', a project chosen due to his father's history as a co-founder of that league.
Ebersol's entrepreneurial ambitions extended to professional sports with the 2018 announcement of the Alliance of American Football (AAF). Despite launching a highly successful mobile app that became the top sports app on the iOS store, the league faced financial collapse. After primary investor Reggie Fowler failed to provide a promised $200 million, the AAF was purchased by Thomas Dundon, who eventually filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in April 2019. While Ebersol faced legal scrutiny regarding the league's collapse, he was cleared of wrongdoing, and related lawsuits were dropped in 2022.
Today, Ebersol focuses on the intersection of sports and technology through Tempus Ex Machina, a company he co-founded in 2021 with Erik Schwartz and Annie Gerhart. In August 2023, the firm merged with Biocore to form Infinite Athlete, providing advanced data visualization and player tracking for major organizations like the NFL and Chelsea FC.
