From walk-on underdog to NFL champion and humanitarian leader
In short: Brian Griese’s journey began without a college scholarship. After walking on at the University of Michigan, he helped lead the Wolverines to a 1997 national championship. His career evolved from an NFL quarterback and Super Bowl winner to a prominent broadcaster and the founder of a major bereavement center.
Griese's ascent in football was defined by resilience. After being denied a scholarship, he walked on at the University of Michigan, where he eventually led the Wolverines to an undefeated 1997 season and a national championship. His success on the field included being named the MVP of the 1998 Rose Bowl, where he threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns against Washington State. In the NFL, he achieved a historic milestone as part of the first father-and-son duo to both win a Super Bowl, following his rookie season victory in Super Bowl XXXIII with the Denver Broncos.
Beyond the gridiron, Griese has maintained a diverse professional presence. He served as a prominent analyst for ESPN from 2009 to 2020, covering both college football and Monday Night Football. His coaching career has also seen him transition from the sidelines to roles such as the quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers, a position he held until leaving the staff in early 2025 to focus on his family.
Perhaps his most enduring legacy is his philanthropic work. Following the death of his mother, Judi, from breast cancer when he was 12, Griese co-founded Judi's House. Based in Colorado, this nonprofit provides evidence-based bereavement support for grieving children. The organization has grown to manage the world's largest research dataset regarding bereaved children, aiming to ensure no child faces grief alone. His humanitarian efforts have been recognized with several honors, including the Big Ten's Dungy-Thompson and Ford-Kinnick Leadership Awards.
