The Charlotte Sting were a founding WNBA franchise that ultimately vanished after ten seasons.
In short: As one of the eight original teams in the Women's National Basketball Association, the Charlotte Sting helped pioneer professional women's basketball in 1997. Despite reaching the finals in 2001 and building a dedicated following in North Carolina, the franchise struggled with financial instability and ownership changes before folding in early 2007.
Launched in 1997, the Charlotte Sting began as the sister organization to the NBA's Charlotte Hornets. The team found early success, qualifying for the playoffs in their inaugural season. By 2001, the Sting achieved their greatest milestone by reaching the WNBA Finals, though they were ultimately defeated in a two-game sweep by the Los Angeles Sparks. This era featured notable talent, including Dawn Staley, who joined the roster following the collapse of the American Basketball League, and Andrea Stinson.
The team's trajectory shifted significantly when the Hornets relocated to New Orleans in 2002. Robert L. Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television, acquired the Sting in January 2003 as part of his broader investment in Charlotte sports, which included establishing the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats. Johnson attempted to revitalize the franchise by rebranding the team's colors to match the Bobcats and moving them to the new Charlotte Bobcats Arena in 2006. Despite these efforts, the organization faced persistent financial losses and declining attendance.
By late 2006, the team's future became precarious. Ownership transferred the franchise to the league in December, citing revenue shortfalls. While there was a brief attempt to relocate the team to Kansas City to play in the Sprint Center, the necessary fundraising failed to materialize. Consequently, the Charlotte Sting officially disbanded on January 3, 2007. The remaining players were redistributed to other WNBA teams through a dispersal draft, marking the end of a decade-long chapter in professional women's basketball history.
