In short: As one of the eight original WNBA franchises, the Sacramento Monarchs defined an era of professional basketball. They secured a championship in 2005 and remained a consistent playoff threat for over a decade. Yet, despite their on-court success and cultural impact, the team abruptly ceased operations in 2009.

Founded in 1997, the Sacramento Monarchs were the sister franchise to the NBA's Sacramento Kings. Early success was driven by standout players like Ticha Penicheiro, Ruthie Bolton, and Yolanda Griffith. While they frequently contended with Western Conference rivals like the Houston Comets and Los Angeles Sparks, the Monarchs struggled to reach the WNBA Finals until a major strategic shift occurred after the 2004 season.

Under head coach John Whisenant, the team pivoted to a defense-oriented system and overhauled its roster. This investment paid off immediately in 2005, when the team achieved a franchise-best 25–9 record. After sweeping their long-time rivals in the playoffs, the Monarchs defeated the Connecticut Sun to claim their first and only WNBA championship. This victory marked a significant cultural milestone, as the team became the first women's professional squad to appear on a Wheaties box.

The team remained competitive for several years, reaching the Finals again in 2006, but the franchise faced mounting challenges toward the end of the decade. Following a difficult 2009 season where the team finished with a 12–22 record, the Maloof family announced they would no longer operate the franchise. Despite league efforts to relocate the team to the San Francisco Bay Area or Oakland, no new ownership emerged. The Monarchs officially folded on November 20, 2009, and as of 2026, they remain the last WNBA team to cease operations entirely.
