Can becoming a supernatural being be the only way to survive a chaotic world?
In short: In the manga Choujin X, two friends face a terrifying reality where humans with supernatural abilities, known as Choujin, threaten to destroy their home. To survive an encounter with one of these beings, they must undergo a radical transformation of their own.
Written and illustrated by Sui Ishida, Choujin X follows the lives of Azuma Higashi and Tokio Kurohara in Yamato Prefecture. Azuma is a high-achieving student with exceptional combat skills and a deep sense of justice. In contrast, Tokio is a non-compliant student who typically remains a bystander during Azuma's fights. Despite these personality differences, the two share an incredibly strong bond that is tested when they encounter a Choujin threatening their lives. The duo resides in Yamato Prefecture, a region facing near-total destruction from these entities. Their journey involves navigating the perilous and unpredictable existence of a supernatural being.
Announced initially during November 2020, the series started its sporadic publication on Shueisha's Tonari no Young Jump site on May 10, 2021. Following a stint in Weekly Young Jump between October 14, 2021, and February 4, 2022, the work moved back to its primary digital home. This irregular release schedule is dictated by Ishida's personal timeline, making the publication process unique within the industry. The series is available in English through Viz Media and the Manga Plus platform. This accessibility allows a wider audience to engage with Ishida's work.
The manga has seen significant commercial success and critical recognition. By December 2022, the series had surpassed 1 million copies in total sales. Early momentum was strong, with the first volume selling 33,113 copies in its first week and the second volume selling 29,852 copies. The series has also earned accolades, ranking 13th in the 2023 Nationwide Bookstore Employees' Recommended Comics and placing sixth in Rakuten Kobo's 2024 E-book Award within a category focused on highly recommended manga intended for a global audience. Initial sales for the first two tankōbon volumes were released in late 2021. The series continues to gain traction through various digital and physical formats.
