In short: Deep in the mountains, a boy named Kabane is treated as a monster until a detective reveals his true nature as a half-ghoul. This discovery pulls him into a secret world in Tokyo, where supernatural creatures navigate life, conflict, and the search for their own mysterious origins.

Kemono Jihen, a manga series by Sho Aimoto, explores a reality where supernatural entities known as Kemono exist in secret alongside humanity. The story follows Kohachi Inugami, a tanuki who operates the Inugami Strangeness Consultancy Office in Tokyo. Inugami is a proponent of coexistence between humans and Kemono, using his own abilities—such as illusion spells and body hardening—to manage cases that bridge the two worlds. His agency serves as a sanctuary for young hybrids, including Kabane, a 13-year-old ghoul-human hybrid who possesses immense strength and regenerative capabilities, provided his head remains intact.

The narrative centers on the search for the Life Calculus, a mysterious object that quenches a ghoul's thirst for flesh. Kabane, once ostracized and abused in a remote village, joins Inugami’s team alongside Shiki, an Arachne-human hybrid, and Akira, a yukionoko from Aomori. While the team seeks to build a life in Tokyo, they face opposition from Inari, a powerful kitsune who serves as the superintendent of the Shinjuku police force. Unlike Inugami, Inari seeks to control humans and rule the country, plotting to seize the Calculi for her own gain.

First serialized in Jump Square in December 2016, the manga has grown significantly in popularity, reaching over 8 million copies in circulation by January 2026. The series, which also inspired a 2021 anime adaptation directed by Masaya Fujimori, is approaching its conclusion with the release of its twenty-sixth volume. Through its diverse cast—ranging from a shut-in immortal vampire to a manipulative kitsune force—the series examines themes of identity, sacrifice, and the complex struggle for harmony between different species.
