In short: Before Blondie became international stars, Chris Stein was documenting the raw energy of the underground. A musician, producer, and photographer, Stein's lens caught the very moment punk and new wave transformed from a local scene into a global phenomenon.

Born in Brooklyn in 1950 to Jewish atheist parents, Stein’s path was shaped by the vibrant, gritty landscape of New York City. After being expelled from Midwood High School for his long hair, he became a central figure in the punk and new wave movements. In 1974, he and Debbie Harry helped form Blondie, a group that would eventually achieve massive international stardom through hits like "Heart of Glass" and "Rapture." He initially played guitar for the Stillettoes before forming his legendary band. This musical journey began in the mid-1970s within the bustling New York club circuit.

Stein's influence extended far beyond the guitar. As a photographer, he documented the early punk era and collaborated with iconic figures such as Andy Warhol and H.R. Giger. His visual work, which included contributions to Punk magazine between 1976 and 1979, was later compiled in his 2014 book, which explored his experiences during the advent of punk. He has also authored a memoir, Under a Rock, published in June 2024. His photographic legacy is further detailed in a 2023 book about his work with H.R. Giger. This volume highlights his creative partnership regarding the KooKoo album.

His personal life was as complex as his music. During a 13-year relationship with Harry, both struggled with heroin addiction, leading to the seizure of their assets by the IRS. Stein also faced significant health challenges, including a diagnosis of pemphigus vulgaris—a rare autoimmune skin disease—in 1982, and more recently, Atrial Fibrillation, which has prevented him from touring with Blondie since 2019. His recovery involved participating in a methadone programme to manage his addiction. Additionally, his daughter Akira tragically passed away from a fentanyl overdose in 2023.
